well, well. . .
Well, it's that time again. Time for me to post something on my blog, time for an update. Some of you will be tempted to make sarcastic remarks about the frequency of my blogging, but hold thy tongue. I spend most of my blogging energy on my youth group blog. And with the help of the google search engine, I'm even teaching myself some amateurish html code. Some might have some spiteful words about me only having blog. "What? No myspace, no facebook? Blogs are so 2003." I know. But I don't need something else to get all hyped up about for a couple of months. If I don't update my blog that often, what would I do with three other websites? Anyway, that's just me.

I'll start out with the relatively unimportant stuff. My '91 Toyota Camry Wagon has 120k miles on it. Our house keeps us dry when it rains. Sarah and I still work at the same place. Sarah's an Employee Advocate. Last month I transitioned into a new role as a an Benefits Analyst. Overall, it's a good place to work. We're trying to eat right and exercise, but isn't everyone?

Our family has grown. In May, Sarah's sister moved in with us. She works a lot of evenings, so we don't see her all the time. But we enjoy having her live with us. We also became teenage parents a few months ago. Jessica, a sixteen year old from our youth group, moved into our other spare room because of some family problems. We're thrilled to make Jessica a part of our family, although we're novices at teenage parenting. The only consolation we have is that it hasn't been too long since we were teenagers. We're learning that parenting is more humility and prayer than anything else. Of course, living with people is like the whole college roommate thing. The first day of the semester you have no problems with your roommate, but it's not long before you discover that you're both selfish human beings. Living together has taught the four of us how selfish we are and how much we need God's grace every day. As you can see by the shamelessly frequent posts below, the Scudder family has a new addition as well. Mara Joy Scudder was born on Christmas Day. It's incredibly exciting that God has brought a new life into the world and into our family.

The thrill and light of our life continues to be the opportunity to serve Christ in our church. Spurgeon was right when he called the body of Christ, "heaven on earth." We spend most of our time in ministry with the young people in our church. If you ever come to this blog and wonder what Derick and Sarah are really up to, go to our youth group website. Sarah and I believe with all our hearts, that our lives are well spent when they are poured into the lives of these teenagers. We can honestly say that we are living out our dream. There's no other place we'd rather be and nothing else we'd rather be doing than making a difference in the lives of young believers. We love the adults in our church too. Last Tuesday, eight or nine of us held a service at Arnett's house. Arnett's an elderly Jamaican member of our church who has been a shut-in for the last two months. So we showed up, sang some songs, heard some preaching and ate pineapple cake with him. On Tuesday night, sitting in a living room with people twice and three times my age--I came the closest to heaven I've ever been. And as we sang choruses to a man in his seventies, it reminded me that heaven isn't too far away.
